When the holidays don’t feel too jolly

Have you ever noticed that in the fall or winter that you feel more down than usual? If so you may suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder
also known as seasonal depression. It is a mood disorder subset, in which people who have normal mental health throughout most of the year exhibit depressive symptoms at the same time each year. Many people exhibit these symptoms in the fall or winter which doctors say might relate to the stress of the holidays, the colder weather, a dip in hormones or from it being darker outside earlier. According to MHA, Four out of five people who have seasonal depression are women & About 4 to 6 percent of people in the United States are affected.

Signs and symptoms of SAD may include:

•Feeling listless, sad or down most of the day, nearly every day
•Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
•Having low energy and feeling sluggish
•Having problems with sleeping too much
•Experiencing carbohydrate cravings, overeating and weight gain
•Having difficulty concentrating
•Feeling hopeless, worthless or guilty
•Having thoughts of not wanting to live.

Ways to cope include,
• light therapy
• increase of vitamin d
• antidepressants (see a medical professional)
• therapy
• exercising or finding other positive ways to keep your mind and body healthy
